MSOE honors leading surgeon at Winter Commencement

Dr. Alfred Tector, one of the nation’s leading thoracic transplant surgeons, will give the keynote address and receive an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree at Milwaukee School of Engineering’s Winter Commencement Feb. 28.

The event begins 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Pabst Theater where nearly 60 students are expected to walk across the stage.

Dr. Tector is CEO of the Midwest Heart Surgery Institute and medical director of transplant programs at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee. He also serves as medical director of MSOE’s Master of Science in Perfusion degree program and is a member of the MSOE Board of Regents.

Tector performed St. Luke's Hospital's first heart transplant in 1984 and has received numerous honors and awards during his career. He is a member of the Wisconsin Heart Association, American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, American Heart Association, American College of Chest Physicians, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Association for Thoracic Surgery, American College for Cardiology, International Cardiovascular Society, Milwaukee Academy of Medicine, International Society for Heart Transplantation and American Society of Artificial Internal Organs.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from Utica College in 1959, an M.D. from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1963, an M.S. from University of Iowa in 1970, and received an honorary doctorate from Utica College in 1997.
