WMSE hosts improv jazz musicians

Don't miss a rare chance to see the fully assembled Territory Band-3, featuring nationally recognized jazz musician and composer Ken Vandermark, live at MSOE's Todd Wehr Conference Center (1047 N. Broadway) this Saturday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. Vandermark leads a dozen world-class, free-jazz and improv musicians, who have come to Milwaukee from as far away as Sweden for this concert.

The very name of the ensemble alludes to the great old "territory bands" that offered a rough-and tumble brand of ensemble virtuosity that was distinct from their urbane, ultra-polished counterparts on the East Coast. After being awarded the MacArthur Prize for music in 1999, Vandermark took the opportunity to put together an international roster of musicians to work together and allow them to deal with any material, perform it and record it.

Tickets are $10, and are available in advance at http://wmse.musictoday.com. Presented by WMSE, Okka Disk and Milwaukee Free Jazz Society. The show is open to all ages.

In conjunction with the concert, Vandermark and a host of others in the music business will sit down with middle- and high-school students to talk about careers in music, whether it be as a musician, behind the boards in a studio or other. Presenters will include WISN TV channel 12 anchor Mike Anderson, a musician; WITI TV 6 anchor and music fan Ted Perry; and Dave Luhrssen, arts and entertainment editor at Shepherd Express Metro. The program takes place 1-5 p.m. Saturday at the Marian Center, St. Francis. The program is presented by the Young Urban Jazz Foundation at the Marian Center and MPS "Gear Up for College" program. Participants will be invited guests at the evening concert.

Independent radio station WMSE 91.7 FM is owned and operated by Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE).
