Local restaurateurs and regular folks will cook-up a heaping helpin’ of their favorite recipes for both meat and veggie chili at the Second Annual WMSE Battle of the Bowls Chili Cook-off. The cook-off, judging for prizes and public tasting take place Sunday, March 28 at the Lakefront Brewery Palm Garden, 1872 N. Commerce St.

International Chili Federation rules apply (no beans or pasta) for the meat chili as 21 teams compete for the Grand Prize, Runner-Up and Best Costume titles. Five restaurants will compete for the People’s Choice title in the veggie chili category.

A panel of celebrity judges will decide the winners and prize winners, including Ted Perry, WITI TV Fox 6 anchor; Scott McGlinchey, executive chef and owner of Heaven City restaurant; Thomas Peschong, executive chef of Riversite Restaurant; Aaron Upton, owner of Real Chili; and Tom Crawford, WMSE station manager.

The $7 admission to the event includes two servings of meat chili and five veggie bowls and additional servings can be purchased for only $1 each. The event begins with veggie chili tasting at 10 a.m. followed by meat tasting and judging at 1 p.m. Awards are presented at 2 p.m. and the event wraps-up by 5 p.m. It wouldn’t be a WMSE event without great music, so Jonny Z and Dietrich will be on-hand to DJ throughout the day.

Proceeds benefit WMSE 91.7 FM, the award-winning, non-commercial radio station owned and operated by Milwaukee School of Engineering.
