Brian Gibboney becomes the latest addition to the MSOE coaching staff as the head coach for men's volleyball, Athletic Director Dan Harris announced today. Gibboney is expected to lead the Raiders with his vast collegiate coaching experience in developing the young program.
"Brian comes to MSOE already having experience as a collegiate head coach, which will be a first for our men's volleyball program," Harris said. "That is a significant step for a program only five years old. We are trying to further develop it as we are now entering the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA), a prestigious conference for men's volleyball. We feel Brian will be able to take us to the next level."
Gibboney has gained collegiate head coaching experience since 2001. He directed both the men's and women's volleyball teams at Dominican University (Ill.) during 2001-2003, where he was recognized as the conference coach of the year for the women's team in 2002. Since last season, he has directed the women's volleyball program at Triton College (Ill.), while also coaching the boy's team at Marist High School to regional success.
The Huntingdon, Penn., native began his collegiate coaching career in 1994 as an assistant for the NCAA Division I women's program at Rider University in New Jersey. He helped lead the team to the NCAA tournament after it captured the Northeast Conference Championship that season, and was a part of three consecutive conference titles overall.
A graduate of Rider University with a bachelor of science in business administration, Gibboney recently earned his master's degree in operations management from Lewis University. He received coaching certification from the United States Volleyball Association and also is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
MSOE's men's volleyball team has previously been independent in its scheduling, but begins its membership into the MIVA this season. The MIVA includes several NCAA Division I universities such as Ohio State, Loyola-Chicago, Ball State and Indiana-Purdue. Ohio State won the regular-season championship last year, though Lewis University (Ill.) prevailed with the tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament semifinals. Lewis won the national championship in 2003 and became the first NCAA Division II team and MIVA team to win the men's volleyball national title.
