MSOE Nursing program receives re-accreditation, fall enrollment largest yet

Milwaukee School of Engineering's School of Nursing has received notification that its Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program has received continued accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (One Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 530, Washington, DC 20036, (202) 887-6791), with no compliance concerns with respect to the key elements.

The program, which began offering its first classes in fall 1995, has been steadily growing, with a record 46 new nursing students registered this fall along with another 47 returning students.

MSOE's nursing laboratories have received high praise from many sources, particularly potential employers of graduates. The changing nature of nursing careers from hands-on service toward the management of technology while still providing excellent patient care fit well with MSOE's laboratory-based education model. It was an important factor in MSOE's decision to undertake nursing education more than 10 years ago. The program also helps the university diversify its offerings in the business and engineering fields which can be greatly affected by cycles in the economy. Nursing is driven by demographics that now predict a stable nursing demand for the next couple of decades. Another added benefit to campus is that the nursing field as the inverse distribution of men and women as does engineering; mixing them has resulted in more women on campus.

As the school celebrates its re-accreditation and good news about enrollments, it is with a heavy heart, as the chairwoman Dr. Mary Louise Brown will leave MSOE this summer to take up another challenge - the ministry. Brown was instrumental in setting up the program curriculum, hiring much of the faculty and has nurtured it for nearly a decade. MSOE is in the process of hiring her replacement.

High school students become nurses for a week this summer

For the first time, MSOE is adding Nursing to its repertoire of Summer Programs for high school students.

This summer is expected to be a dismal market for teens looking for summer jobs, but it is still important they do something constructive this summer. That could include a Summer Program at MSOE, which can help develop skills and build confidence. Plus, it looks great on that college application.

Every summer, MSOE welcomes hundreds of high school students to stay on campus and explore a world of career opportunities. Participants learn how engineering, nursing and technology relate to job fields and practical applications. And, it exposes them to real college life for a whole week. With MSOE's Summer Programs, students can determine what interests them and what is most important in their college search.

MSOE's first Focus on Nursing, a kind of summer nursing camp, will be held July 25-30. Discover the Possibilities, which explores a number of engineering and related disciplines, is scheduled for July 11-16 and another session July 18-23. Focus on the Possibilities, which focuses on a specific career field, will be held July 25-30. Call (414) 277-7300 for more information.
