For the third year in a row, the MSOE wrestling team received a national academic award for having the highest grade point average in the nation among all NCAA Division III wrestling teams.
MSOE received the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Coaches Association Award during the national wrestling tournament in Dubuque, Iowa. The team’s GPA was 3.73 -- the highest ever recorded by a team in the eight years that the coaches association has presented this award.
"To win this award for the third year in a row and to have the highest GPA of any team that has ever won this award is incredible,” said head coach Kevin Morin. “The programs at MSOE aren’t easy and that makes us appreciate this award even more. Once again these guys proved that if you make a total commitment to both your academic and athletic pursuits, you can be successful in both.”
At nationals, MSOE wrestler Matthew Schoenherr (Tomahawk, Wis.) earned All-American status in the 285# weight class, after recording wins in two tough matches, and finishing in 8th place. The MSOE team finished in 31st place at the national tournament. The Raiders also were the Lake Michigan Conference Champions, champions of the Lawrence University Invitational and posted a dual meet record of 7 wins and 5 losses.
