The Kern Center, MSOE's brand-new $31 million athletic, health and wellness facility has a brand-new director. Raimund Stelter joins the MSOE staff as coordinator of the Kern Center, announced Athletic Director Dan Harris today.

The planned Kern Center is a 210,000 square-foot recreation, athletic, health and wellness facility that is slated to open in fall 2004. It is the first such facility for MSOE which competes in NCAA Division III athletics. The center exemplifies MSOE's philosophy of a well-rounded university experience and will be an important asset in attracting prospective students and providing current students with ample access to fitness, whether they are participating in NCAA athletics, intramural sports or individual fitness programs.

"I am delighted that we have been able to secure an experienced professional like Rai Stelter to coordinate the operation of the Kern Center," Harris said. "He comes to us highly recommended and will bring great leadership to our recreational program. The Kern Center will be the gem of our campus and Rai is just the person to take on the challenge of running it."

Stelter will run the Kern Center after working 11 years at Marquette University as the coordinator of facilities, events and community outreach programs. He comes to MSOE with a lengthy background of experience in sports management, athletics and education. Prior to his post at Marquette, Stelter also worked at UW-Milwaukee as the assistant director of recreation and assistant intramural coordinator.

Stelter's coaching experience has ranged from the NCAA Division I level to high school, including Marquette and Concordia Universities as the assistant wrestling coach. Stelter also was an associate lecturer in the Department of Human Kinetics at UWM and a physical education teacher in the Fox Point school system. A certified teacher and graduate of UW-Oshkosh, he received his Master of Science in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy.
