Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) has received a gift of $40,000 to establish The Joy Griesbach Teschner College Endowment Scholarship. The undergraduate scholarship for women students is named in honor of Mrs. Teschner, who was a champion for parks, an advocate for women's rights and active in local and national politics.

Teschner, who died in February 2003, was the first woman to serve as president of Milwaukee County Parks Commission and later co-founded the Park People organization. In 1951 she became the first woman elected to the Whitefish Bay Village Board, later helped initiate the campaign to incorporate Mequon into a city, and was the first woman to serve on the Mequon Common Council, the Ozaukee County Board and the Ozaukee County Park Commission.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Teschner graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1931 with a degree in journalism. She then worked in public relations, editing and reporting and was court reporter for the State Industrial Commission. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard R. Teschner, a Milwaukee attorney.

MSOE is an independent university with about 2,400 students. MSOE offers 16 bachelor's degrees and six master's degrees in the engineering, engineering technology, architectural engineering and building construction, computer, business and health-related fields.
