MSOE senior wrestler Matt Schoenherr (Tomahawk, Wis.), the three-time NCAA Division III National Tournament qualifier, became MSOE’s second wrestler and second male athlete to gain NCAA All-American status when he finished in eighth place in the 285-pound class at the NCAA Division III National Championship held last weekend in Dubuque, Iowa. Schoenherr’s feat, along with former teammate Matt Huset’s eighth place finish at the national tournament last year, gives MSOE back-to-back All-Americans.
In Schoenherr’s career, he is a three-time Lake Michigan Conference (LMC) Champion from 2002-2004. His lowest finish in the LMC was second-place his freshman year. Schoenerr matched his three-peat as an Academic All-American and a Wisconsin Private College Invitational champion. He is a four-year letterman and was a team captain his junior and senior years. Schoenherr leaves the MSOE wrestling program with the record for most career wins (123) and pins (33). He also shares the record for most wins in a single season with Huset at 39.
“Words can not explain how happy I was for Matt, when he defeated Lycoming College’s Tom Snyder to guarantee an All-American season,” said head wrestling coach Kevin Morin. “He has come so close in the past. I am ecstatic that it worked out for him.”
Schoenherr is enrolled in the architectural engineering program and is schedule to graduate this May.
