Milwaukee School of Engineering's (MSOE) Bachelor of Science degree in Software Engineering recently received accreditation from Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The MSOE program is one of the first in the country to receive this accreditation.

Although the field was first christened more than 30 years ago, software engineering bachelor's programs in the United States have only come into existence in the last few years. Begun in fall 1999, MSOE's program was created in response to the growing industry demand for qualified software development professionals who have the combination of creativity and discipline that are characteristic of engineering practice and process. The program's first class graduated in May 2002.

"The faculty have worked hard to build the program and to prepare for the ABET visit, and the software engineering students have helped to shape and improve the program," said Mark Sebern, program director of the B.S. in software engineering.

"Our industry partners have been very supportive and eager to benefit from what our graduates have to offer. The accreditation of this program is a sign of the maturity of software engineering as an accepted engineering discipline; we hope our graduates will play a major role in improving the software systems on which industry and society depend."

Last year, MSOE inaugurated the Johnson Controls Environmental Systems Laboratory, a specialized lab underwritten by a $1 million donation from the company.

Founded in 1903, MSOE is celebrating its first 100 years. MSOE is an independent university with about 2,600 students. MSOE offers 16 bachelor's degrees in areas such as engineering, nursing, business, management information systems, technical communication, engineering technology and construction management. Graduate study includes engineering, engineering management, environmental engineering, structural engineering, medical informatics and perfusion.
