Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) is playing host to a unique and interactive exhibition of outstanding first- and early-edition books and manuscripts. The free exhibition, Book Treasures, is unique in that visitors may not only view these masterpieces, but are encouraged to page through and read them.

These 45 books from the Remnant Trust Collection will be on view in Milwaukee School of Engineering’s Walter Schroeder Library through Wednesday, Nov. 26.

This is a rare opportunity to peruse such works as Aristotle’s “Ethics” printed in 1496; Benjamin Franklin’s “Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society Founding Document” printed in 1787, Goethe’s “Faust” from 1833, and a first edition proof copy of George Orwell’s modern classic “Animal Farm” from 1946. The Book Treasurers Web page contains a complete list of titles.

Book Treasures gives technology-savvy students the opportunity to experience early examples of how information was disseminated centuries before the Internet, and to gain perspective on how printing and mass media influenced education of the masses.

MSOE’s Walter Schroeder Library is located at 500 E. Kilbourn Ave. Library hours are: 1-3 p.m. Monday – Thursday; 1-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; hours vary during university breaks and holidays. Admission is free.
