MSOE honors graduates, teachers at Winter 2003 Commencement

Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) will celebrate its Winter 2003 Commencement 10 a.m. Saturday, March 1 at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts in Milwaukee, Uihlein Hall.

Faculty and staff in colorful academic garb will process and 50 students will walk across the stage to receive their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering, nursing and business.

Some of the highlights are:

Class Respondent (valedictorian) will be Melissa Anne DeBord of Glendale, Wis., who will receive a B.S. in Management Systems and graduate with honors.

Several graduates are nominated to be included in the prestigious “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges”:

    Andrew John Schumacher of Dayton, Ohio, who will receive a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and graduate with honors

    Kim Van Handel of Appleton, Wis., who will receive a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and graduate with honors;

    Mordechai B.C. Cohen of Milwaukee who will receive a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and graduate with honors. Cohen also will receive the Alumni Association Award for Student Achievement.

Three high school teachers will receive the “V.I.P”/Excellence in High School Teaching Awards for their positive influence on graduating MSOE students:

    ·John Alexander, a teacher at Hamilton High School in Sussex, Wis., was nominated by his former student Kevin A. Guetzke, who is graduating with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a B.S. in Management Systems.

    ·Robbie Fackelman, a teacher at West Bend (Wis.) East High School, was nominated by Brian Allen Wickland, who is graduating with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.

    ·Leif Gigstad, a Sheboygan Falls (Wis.) High School teacher, who was nominated by Jonah D. Husting will receive a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology.

Founded in 1903, MSOE is celebrating its first 100 years. MSOE is an independent university with about 2,600 students. MSOE offers 16 bachelor’s degrees in areas such as engineering, nursing, business, management information systems, technical communication, engineering technology and construction management. Graduate study includes engineering, engineering management, environmental engineering, structural engineering, medical informatics and perfusion.
