High school students test mettle at regional math and science bowl

Results are in from the regional section of the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl competition. Teams from 22 Wisconsin and Illinois high schools competed in this challenging Jeopardy-style competition on subjects such as astronomy, biology, physics, chemistry, computers, the earth and general sciences.
The competition was hosted Feb. 8 by Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) and sponsored by Johnson Controls of Milwaukee.
The first place team, Arrowhead High School, will receive an expense-paid trip to the National Science Bowl May 1-5 in Washington D.C.
1st Place: Arrowhead High School, Hartland, Wis. Team Members were seniors Tyler Cockle, Sam Eckels, Peter Eckels, Ted Merchant and junior Karl Gohde was alternate. The coach was Cheryl Kaiser.
2nd Place: Whitefish Bay High School, Whitefish Bay, Wis. Team Members were seniors Matt Bayer, Carl Erickson, Simon Lank and junior John Popper was alternate. Guy Guglielmi coached the team.
3rd Place: Libertyville High School, Libertyville, Ill. Team members were seniors Katie Ross, Carl Chase and alternate Thomas Quimby; junior Steve Canning and sophomore Raj Patel. Patricia Sharp was the team coach.
Founded in 1903, MSOE is celebrating its first 100 years. MSOE is an independent university with about 2,600 students. MSOE offers 16 bachelor’s degrees in areas such as engineering, nursing, business, management information systems, technical communication, engineering technology and construction management. Graduate study includes engineering, engineering management, environmental engineering, structural engineering, medical informatics and perfusion.
