While Monday, Jan. 6 marks a new day in Wisconsin state government, folks at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) are celebrating another milestone – MSOE turns 100 this year and the university is kicking off a yearlong celebration.
The
celebration begins with program organized by MSOE students at 12:15
p.m. Monday, Jan. 6., where MSOE’s new centennial logo will be proudly
displayed on a huge banner; student leaders will present a time capsule
they created to President Hermann Viets; and Jan. 6 will officially be
proclaimed “MSOE Day” by the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County.
MSOE was founded a hundred years ago by a 23-year-old German named Oscar Werwath. He came to Milwaukee as a stop on a trip around the world and liked the city so much he decided to stay. After taking a job with the company that would become Louis Allis, Werwath started teaching classes on electricity that same year to a group of seven students in a borrowed classroom. And the rest, as they say, is history. From its humble beginnings, MSOE has become a force in engineering education as well as business and nursing, with about 3,000 students, a 14-acre campus and 18,000 active alumni worldwide.
MSOE will mark its centennial with a number of special events such as a speaker series, alumni events, and inductions of former athletes into the MSOE Athletics Hall of Fame. In an effort to collect, preserve, interpret and share MSOE’s history, a coffee table history book will be published in mid-2003, written by Dr. Ellen Langill. Also, an archive has been established and several displays of historic objects will be presented in the Campus Center, including one representing founder Oscar Werwath and another heralding the proud history of the MSOE School of Nursing.
The university’s new Centennial Web site will feature MSOE history, photos from the early 20th century to today, a timeline, updates on alumni and their accomplishments, the top 50 employers of MSOE graduates, a message board for alumni and more.
Founded in 1903, MSOE is celebrating its first 100 years.
MSOE offers 16 bachelor’s degrees in areas such as engineering, nursing, business, management information systems, technical communication, engineering technology and construction management. Graduate study includes engineering, engineering management, environmental engineering, structural engineering, medical informatics and perfusion.
