Student teams from Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) placed among the top three teams in the nation at the National Student Competition, sponsored by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC). Students from across the nation competed in three divisions: Design-Build, Commercial Construction, and Heavy Civil Construction.
MSOE's Design-Build team earned second place - their third top-three national finish in the past three years. The Commercial Construction team earned third place.
As members of the Design-Build team, Joshua Buckholt, Adam Friedman, Matthew Johnson, Jeffery Thiel and Jamie Zimdahl were asked to create a fictitious design-build firm and provide a solution for a new Humanities Classroom Center for the University of California - Irvine. Chad Kucik and Laura Anthony served as team alternates, and Professor Robert Lemke advised the team. Students provided schematic design, estimate, schedule, construction logistics and company marketing material. The solution was judged by UC - Irvine owner representatives, architects and construction personnel based on the team's presentation and their ability to provide the best value facility while staying within the owner's requirements and budget.
Members of the Commercial Construction team were Kevin Beisiegel, Andy Goetz , Scott Metke, Seth Miller, Austin Schultz and Neil Trainor. Andy Schmitz supported the team, which was advised by Michael Jahner. For the competition, the team was required to act from the perspective of a construction management firm and submit construction logistics, safety, estimate and scheduling solution for an aquarium renovation project located on a pier in Seattle, Wash. The solution was judged by industry construction management professionals and ranked according to the presentation, accuracy of estimate and schedule, and the ability to address the specific challenges regarding safety and logistics.
MSOE is an independent university with about 2,500 students. MSOE offers 17 bachelor's degrees and 10 master's degrees in the engineering, engineering technology, architectural engineering and building construction, computer, business and health-related fields.
