During the 9th Annual Women in the Workplace Banquet in early April, more than 80 attendees watched as alumnae presented on the night's theme: Alternative Paths.

Each discussed how engineering skills and an MSOE education helped shape their careers - although they don't work as engineers. Panelists were: Haly Besaw '85, an electrical engineering alumna, who currently works as a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch; Judy Demers '01, an electrical engineering alumna who currently works as a bank manager for Johnson Bank; and Rebecca Grassl '03, an architectural engineering alumna, who is currently a program manager of the student union at University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.

A plaque, dedicated to the memory of Firouzeh Keshmiri and the work she did for women at MSOE, was presented to the Mechanical Engineering Department for placement near Lee's Lounge. An endowed scholarship fund, in her name, has been created by her family and friends. Anyone interested in donating to the fund should contact Frank Habib via e-mail or at (414) 277-7259.

Also, the annual Making a Difference for Women at MSOE awards were bestowed upon:

  • Student recipient: Brittany Christensen, senior IE student who has held the title of SUB president and is currently the SGA president. She has been a wonderful advocate and role model for the women on campus.
  • Faculty/staff recipient: Betty Albrecht, Student Support Services. Her tireless advocacy and efforts to be present for all students, including women, earned her this award.
  • Lifetime Achievement Award: Mary Jo Wellenstein, Counseling Services. Her work at MSOE and her efforts to ensure women feel welcome and comfortable on campus earned her this honor. She received a much deserved standing ovation.
