MSOE athlete nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year

Catherine Chappell, who graduated from Milwaukee School of Engineering in February 2008 with a degree in electrical engineering, has been chosen as the Northern Athletics Conference nominee for the 18th annual NCAA Woman of the Year award.  Chappell was chosen based on the voting by all NAC Senior Woman Administrators Standing Committee (SWASC) members. She is one of 130 conference and independent nominees for the award.

The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors senior student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership. Nominees represent all three NCAA divisions.

Chappell, the MSOE all-time leading scorer in basketball, was named a Kodak All-American honorable mention selection in women's basketball for the 2006-2007 season and placed fifth in the heptathlon in the 2007 NCAA outdoor championships to reach All-American status. She is one of only seven MSOE students to be named All-American and one of two student-athletes in the institution's history to be named All-American in more than one sport or event. Chappell graduated MSOE with a 3.27 GPA in Electrical Engineering, and was named a 2007-08 Northern Athletics Conference Scholar-Athlete.

"Catherine Chappell concludes her career as perhaps the greatest all-around athlete in MSOE history," said MSOE Director of Athletics Dan Harris. "We will miss her as she continues her life as an officer in the United States Air Force."

The top 10 honorees in each division will be announced later this month followed by the selection of the top three honorees per division. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will choose the winner from the top nine honorees, and the 2008 NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced at an awards dinner in Indianapolis on October 19.

To be eligible for this award, the female student-athlete must have earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sponsored sport and competed during the 2007-08 academic year. In addition, each individual must have completed intercollegiate eligibility in her primary sport by the end of the 2008 spring season and must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5.
