WMSE 91.7FM will host its seventh annual "Food Slam" fundraiser at the Eisner American Museum of Advertising and Design on Friday, Oct. 3, from 6 to 10 p.m. Twenty-four area restaurants will dish out specialty entrees for up to 400 WMSE listeners and supporters. A silent auction boasting more than 80 unique packages will also benefit the non-profit, non-commercial music station that evening.
This is the fourth consecutive year that the Eisner, located at 208 N. Water St. in Milwaukee's fashionable and historic Third Ward district, is hosting the event. "The most rewarding part of the Food Slam is the diversity throughout the evening. Everything from the featured restaurants, to the auction, to everyone in attendance makes this a special event for the community. You'll see younger folks talking with older folks and everyone's having a great time for a great cause. The entire event really encompasses WMSE's diverse programming and mission," said Jason Mohr, WMSE development director.
New this year, WMSE is proud to announce Food Slam is partnering with the Hunger Task Force. "We figured since Food Slam is by nature completely gluttonous, we should give back to those in need," said Ryan Schleicher, WMSE promotions director. Donations to the Hunger Task Force are possible when purchasing event tickets online in advance, and Food Slam attendees who bring at least three non-perishable food items to the event will receive one free drink ticket.
All food is included in the $30 admission price at the door, though reserving a spot in advance is highly recommended. Likely to sell out, tickets are now available online at wmse.org for the discounted rate of $25, which allows attendees to try food and beverages prepared by Maxie's Southern Comfort, Meritage, Nanakusa Japanese Restaurant, Rishi Tea, Simma's Bakery and others.
From 6 to 9 p.m., more than 80 one-of-a-kind auction packages will be up for bid, allowing all in attendance the chance to score valuable goods and services for below-market value, thanks to the generosity of many of our area's businesses, organizations and artists. Often assembled with a sense of whimsy, auction packages include items like a vintage suitcase full of goodies paying tribute to "The Rat Pack." More straightforward offerings will also be available, such as sports tickets, clothing, gift certificates or artwork. There will also be a raffle for a Specialized HRXC Mountain Bike valued at $420 from Ben's Cycle and Milwaukee Bicycle Company.
The Food Slam is open to all members of the community, and a cash bar will be serving beer provided by the Milwaukee Ale House and select wines by Dee's Wine Stop. WMSE's DJ White Bread (of Monday's 9 to 11 a.m. World Music program) will be providing music in the form of familiar favorites and rare soul and funk throughout the night. Each of the Eisner Museum's current exhibits, including a vintage Fossil exhibit, will be on view as well.
WMSE's seventh annual Food Slam is sponsored by Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, Milwaukee Ale House, Dee's Wine Stop, Bella's Fat Cat, Maxie's Southern Comfort, Clark Graphics and The Onion.
