MSOE joins national civic and community service coalition

Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) has joined Campus Compact, a national coalition of more than 1,200 colleges and universities that are dedicated to advancing campus-based civic and community engagement. The recent book Colleges with a Conscience (The Princeton Review, 2005) notes, "Membership in Campus Compact shows a commitment to making community and public service part of campus life."

MSOE established the Pieper Family Endowed Chair for Servant-Leadership in 2004, a position now held by Dr. David Howell. The Office of Servant-Leadership creates opportunities for students who aspire to be principled, innovative and socially conscious contributors to a caring and civil society.

Students at Campus Compact member schools contribute an estimated $7 billion in service to their communities each year through campus-organized initiatives alone. MSOE is pleased to be part of this growing national network of colleges and universities that are working to build strong local communities while educating the next generation of responsible leaders.

MSOE will be working closely with Wisconsin Campus Compact, one of the organization's 34 state offices, to work towards building and strengthening community partnerships, engage students in high quality service-learning experiences, and provide professional development opportunities for MSOE faculty and staff interested in building civic engagement into their courses/programs. Being part of a state- and national-level organization will allow MSOE to build on its existing work in the community by increasing the visibility of this work, leveraging resources and expanding opportunities for innovative collaborations.

In February, MSOE won a place on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for 2007. Launched in 2006, the award recognizes extraordinary contributions to service in the school's communities. Winning universities were selected on factors such as scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation, incentives for service and the extent the school offers service-learning courses.

MSOE's exemplary community service record reflects the quality of the students, 722 of whom gave 20,616 hours to the betterment of humankind. Such service shows that MSOE students are dedicated to academics, their personal futures - and also the future of their community!
