MSOE builds ship for Milwaukee Admirals

Students from MSOE’s Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) student chapter worked in conjunction with the Milwaukee Admirals to design and construct a moving ship for "Roscoe," their mascot, to ride. The Lake Express Icebreaker officially set sail on Oct. 18, 2008 at the home opener of the Milwaukee Admirals. Students worked all summer at the Bradley Center to construct the vessel, which runs on a modified golf cart.
The partnership was formed thanks to Tim Van Wagoner of the Admirals game operations department. “We saw a stationary ship façade that the MSOE engineering students did for the Kern Center for their own hockey games, so we commissioned those same students to build us a fully operational 3-D version,” Van Wagoner told SportsBubbler.com.

A team of eight students worked on the 400 level of the Bradley Center to complete the construction. Students who worked on the ship include:  Jacob Bagal, Andy Blau, Danny Blau, Jason Goike, Jessica Phillips, Ben Pielhop, Mitch Setterman and Josh Wilsmann.  “Some of the tougher parts were designing the deck gun that Roscoe uses to shoot shirts into the seats, and designing the ship so that it could be moved between the 400 level down to the floor level and back,” said project manager Andy Blau.
Students will continue to modify the ship with small changes in the future, and four MSOE students are commissioned to run the ship during home games.
