MSOE's Rader School of Business (RSOB) will run the Blatz Café, a small coffee shop located in the Blatz Condominiums off of Broadway and Highland Avenue in downtown Milwaukee.
The café, which is entirely run and managed by students of RSOB, opened Feb. 26 after students received approval from the Blatz Condominium Board of Directors and MSOE administration. The idea of having a student-led business venture, something strongly supported by RSOB faculty, became reality when select students convinced both the Blatz Condominium Association and MSOE administration that the café would serve not only as a coffee shop, but also as a method through which students will apply the business-oriented education they receive while attending MSOE.
All aspects of the café, from marketing, to accounting, to operations management will be handled by a team of experienced students from various business-oriented majors. Says Dr. Steven Bialek, chairman of the Rader School of Business, "These students truly represent what MSOE is all about. The initiative they showed in creating a proposal and business plan for the coffee shop demonstrates that they are actively engaged in their education and have a desire to carry their knowledge beyond the classroom."
The Blatz Café, open to the general public, is becoming an integral part of the RSOB and MSOE community. Café operations not only provide experience-oriented employment for MSOE students, but also supplement MSOE's vision and goals of student-empowered education and curricula.
