Dr. Gul Afshan named 2009 Outstanding Educator

Dr. Gul Afshan has been named the American Society for Engineering Education's 2009 North Midwest Section Outstanding Educator Award recipient. Afshan is an associate professor in Milwaukee School of Engineering's Physics and Chemistry Department

MSOE is the first and only university in the state of Wisconsin to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in BioMolecular Engineering, and it has come to fruition as a result of Afshan's foresight and dedication to the program. Students will begin enrolling in this program in Fall of 2009. Afshan has led the curriculum development and is working to determine and design the laboratory space that will be needed for this new degree.

Afshan admitted that a benefit of teaching, which she has done at MSOE for the past 9 years, is the transformative nature of the classroom. "I'm a student myself in that class all day. The students always teach me and, the best part is, they don't know that they're teaching me. And I always thank my students at the end, because I am no longer the same person."

Afshan was awarded the Falk Engineering Educator Award at MSOE in 2005, which is given annually to a full-time faculty member with less than seven years experience. It is a testament to exemplary dedication and performance at MSOE. In 2006, Afshan received MSOE's Outstanding Mentor Award. The mentor award is given annually to an MSOE faculty or staff in recognition of continual support of students and their concerns.

MSOE is an independent university with 2,600 students. MSOE offers 17 bachelor's degrees and nine master's degrees in the engineering, engineering technology, architectural engineering and building construction, computer, business and health-related fields. The university has a national academic reputation; longstanding ties to business and industry; dedicated professors with real-world experience; and extremely high placement rates and starting salaries. MSOE graduates are well-rounded, technologically experienced and highly productive professionals and leaders.
