MSOE senior wrestler Joel VandeBoom (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington) was named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-America® At-Large Men's Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Men's At-Large program for the Academic All-America® includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
VandeBoom, an architectural engineering/construction management major, was an All-District V third team selection a year ago. In 2009, he lands on the Academic All-America® team and is one of only 30 honorees to receive this award. This is VandeBoom's third national academic award in his career as he also received such honors from the National Wrestling Coaches Association in 2008 and 2009.
Wrestling at 157 pounds, VandeBoom finished his season as the most outstanding wrestler at the Northern Wrestling Association Championships. The four-year letter winner served as team captain for two years. He was also a conference champion twice during his wrestling career.
Academically, he was a Dean's List student all four years at MSOE. On campus, VandeBoom served as president of the Sigma Lamda Chi Construction Engineer's Society and was the treasurer of Tau Beta Pi, a national engineering honor society. He was also a member of the MSOE Student Athletic Advisory Committee where he served as treasurer this past year.
VandeBoom becomes the tenth Academic All-American® in the university's history.
MSOE has a total of 22 varsity sports, with the majority of the sports competing in the Northern Athletics Conference and three sports competing in independent conferences. MSOE is an independent university with about 2,600 students. MSOE offers 17 bachelor's degrees and nine master's degrees in the engineering, engineering technology, architectural engineering and building construction, computer, business and health-related fields.
