Nine students traveled with Dr. Carolyn "Kelly" Ottman to China this summer for a new program titled, "Doing Business in China." The trip was part of MSOE's Rader School of Business graduate management program. Students began their learning during Spring Quarter as they studied strategy, human resources, ethics and other management issues related to China.
The students then gained first-hand experience through 11 days of travel in Shanghai, Suzhou and Beijing. They networked with Chinese business professionals, U.S. expatriates, Chinese and U.S. government officials and local leaders during corporate tours and meetings. The program featured several key business partnerships.
"Through discussions with business partners and cultural tours, the students learned how culture, history, politics and religion are woven together to influence leadership, organizational behavior, human resource management and ethics in China. The trip solidified and extended the knowledge the students gained through 11 weeks of domestic study," said Ottman. "They learned that China is moving from being the ‘factory of the world' to becoming an innovation leader. They also came to understand that operations in China are needed to reach an increasingly large customer base - the Chinese middle class."
