WMSE 91.7FM announces Radio Summer Camp

     WMSE 91.7FM willRadio Summer Camp 2011 host its third annual Radio Summer Camp music festival from Wednesday, July 27 through Sunday, July 31.

     Radio Summer Camp is a five-day music festival featuring live music at 10 different Milwaukee club, theater and ballroom venues. The festival kicks off July 27 at Turner Hall Ballroom with concerts by Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Tweak Bird and Call Me Lightning. On July 28 The Rave plays host to The Handsome Furs, an indie-rock duo from Montreal.

     On July 29 and 30, several Milwaukee clubs will host national, touring acts and some of Milwaukee’s finest bands. National acts include Richard Buckner, Daniel Martin Moore, Rafter, Blueprint, William Tyler, Dosh, Haley Bonar, A Lull, The Giving Tree Band, Carbon Leaf, French TV, Virtual Boy DEDE and many more. Locals include Jaill, Heidi Spender and the Rare Birds, Juiceboxxx, The Pills, Wereworm, Vic & Gab, Group of the Altos, Conrad Plymouth and many more.

     The festival culminates with the Backyard BBQ at Cathedral Square Park on Sunday, July 31. The free, all-day outdoor concert will showcase an amazing cross section of American music and great summer food from seven Milwaukee businesses: Maxie’s Southern Comfort, Ball n’ Biscuit Catering, Flannery’s, JT Bones, Babe’s Ice Cream, Red Rock Saloon and The Fast Foodie. Musically, The Budos Band headlines the Backyard BBQ with supporting acts Whitney Morgan & the 78’s, Jambalaya Brass Band, Two Cow Garage, Will Phalen and the Stereo Addicts and The Uptown Savages.

     Four-day passes for Radio Summer Camp are on sale now and include access to every Radio Summer Camp concert (except the Ted Leo kick-off show).      By offering Radio Summer Camp, WMSE hopes to bolster the Milwaukee music community by pairing some of Milwaukee’s best artists with great national and international touring bands and musicians. “The goal of this whole thing is to continue bringing greater visibility to what is happening, and what can happen, with Milwaukee’s music scene. We’re celebrating the music and we’re celebrating the venues that make the music possible,” said Ryan Schleicher, WMSE promotions director.

     “There are so many great things happening musically in this city. It’s on all of us to celebrate that and help inspire bands to keep going and to let them know that it’s possible to live a life in music right here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Nobody has to leave to get noticed. Milwaukee has proven that and then some these past few years,” said Tom Crawford, WMSE station manager.

     91.7 WMSE-FM is a non-profit, listener-supported radio service educationally licensed to Milwaukee School of Engineering. WMSE’s on-air staff is made up of dedicated community volunteers who specialize in the genre that is featured on their respective programs. Funding for WMSE Radio is provided by the WMSE listening community through membership contributions and by area businesses through program underwriting. 91.7FM WMSE is financially independent of MSOE.
