Spend an evening with Mark Wentzel, Milwaukee-area African artifact collector, on Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wentzel will display 50 pieces of West African art and artifacts in the Todd Wehr Auditorium at Milwaukee School of Engineering, 1047 N. Broadway.
Wentzel attended a university in Sierra Leone and was roommates with a student from the Mende tribe. He has since returned to visit and volunteer in sub-Saharan countries several times. He interacted with many tribes--sometimes receiving authentic items as gifts. The pieces in Wentzel's collection come from 14 different countries, and what will be displayed at MSOE represent the academic offerings of the university: nursing/medicine, business, engineering/utilitarian, and communication.
During his presentation, Wentzel will describe how these artifacts were used within their cultures.
Evening with the Artist is sponsored by MSOE VOICES (Valuing Opportunities for Inclusion, Cultural enrichment, Education and Social justice) and the following MSOE student organizations: National Society of Black Engineers and the Straight and Gay Alliance.
