Wisconsin regional Science Bowl winner announced

Marshfield (Wis.) High School won the Wisconsin regional championship in the U.S. Department of Energy's National Science Bowl® for high school students held January 23 at Milwaukee School of Engineering. The winning team, pictured here, was comprised of (left to right): 2010 Wisconsin Regional Science Bowl WinnersCoach Paul Herder, Elisa Prebble, Alex Jensen, Seth Berger, Parijat Sharma and Priya Pathak. The team advances to Washington, D.C., to compete against 67 other regional winners at the National Science Bowl April 29 to May 4.

Second place went to Whitefish Bay (Wis.) High School and third place went to J.I. Case High School of Racine, Wis.

Fifteen teams of high school science and math students from Wisconsin competed. Many of these teams spent months preparing for the National Science Bowl's regional competition, which features head-to-head competition in a fast-paced question and answer format similar to Jeopardy. The students were quizzed on all science disciplines including biology, chemistry, earth science, physics and astronomy, as well as math. Most questions are so challenging many scientists would have trouble finding an answer.

In 2010, more than 13,000 high school sophomores, juniors and seniors from 1,800 schools in 42 states will compete. Since 1991, more than 150,000 students and teachers have participated in the event.

MSOE is an independent university with about 2,600 students. MSOE offers 17 bachelor's degrees and nine master's degrees in the engineering, engineering technology, architectural engineering and building construction, computer, business, nursing and health-related fields.
