Wonders of Work and Labor at the Grohmann Museum

The paintings and prints in the Steidle Collection capture the power and beauty of industry. The images, potent reminders of earlier industrial development in America, are visual records connecting fine arts, industry and education before World War II. In this special collaboration with the Earth and Mineral Sciences Museum and Art Gallery at The Pennsylvania State University, the Grohmann Museum is pleased to present a selection of the most captivating pieces from the Steidle collection. The exhibit will be at the Grohmann Museum, 1000 N. Broadway, from Sept. 18, 2010 through Jan. 2, 2011.

Experts from the Earth and Mineral Sciences Museum and Art Gallery will present a short Steidle symposium on Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. as part of Milwaukee's Gallery Night and Day event. Enjoy free admission to the Grohmann Museum and hear from Betsy Fahlman, professor of art history at Arizona State University; Russell Wm. Graham, director of the Earth and Mineral Sciences Museum and Art Gallery; and Julianne Snider, assistant director of the Earth and Mineral Sciences Museum and Art Gallery.

The Grohmann Museum is home to the Man at Work collection, which comprises more than 800 paintings and sculptures dating from 1580 to the present. They reflect a variety of artistic styles and subjects that document the evolution of organized work: from farming and mining to trades such as glassblowing and seaweed gathering. The Grohmann Museum welcomes visitors to three floors of galleries where a core collection is displayed as well as themed exhibitions. The museum is located at MSOE, an independent university with about 2,600 students. MSOE offers 17 bachelor's degrees and 10 master's degrees in the engineering, engineering technology, architectural engineering and building construction, computer, business, nursing and health-related fields.
