MSOE helps expand Project Lead The Way

MSOE has been chosen as the Midwest university to be the affiliate for the new Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Program. MSOE is only the seventh BMS affiliate in the nation for this growing program. As the affiliate, MSOE will:

•    train high school teachers in the BMS curriculum so they can teach it in their respective schools
•    serve as an accreditation agent
•    train high school counselors about the program and what it involves
•    provide transcripted undergraduate course credit for high school students who complete the BMS classes
•    advocate for and raise awareness of the program throughout the region

The Biomedical Science Program prepares students for careers in health and science. The program is modeled after the PLTW Engineering Program and administered in the same fashion. The BMS courses include:

•    Principles of the Biomedical Sciences
•    Human Body Systems
•    Medical Interventions
•    Biomedical Innovation

Currently there are 20 high schools in Wisconsin teaching the BMS curriculum. Now that MSOE is the affiliate, the program will grow much more quickly in Wisconsin and the Midwest.

PLTW offers middle school and high school curriculum that combines college preparatory mathematics and science courses. The emphasis of the courses is to introduce the scope, rigor and discipline that engineering and engineering technology programs require.

PLTW is the leading provider of rigorous and innovative STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education curricular programs used in middle and high schools across the U.S. The hands-on, project-based engineering and biomedical sciences courses engage students on multiple levels, expose them to areas of study that they typically do not pursue, and provide them with a foundation and proven path to college and career success.

MSOE is an independent university with 2,600 students. MSOE offers 18 bachelor’s degrees and 10 master’s degrees in the engineering, engineering technology, building and infrastructure engineering, computer, business, nursing and health-related engineering fields. The university has a national academic reputation; longstanding ties to business and industry; dedicated professors with real-world experience; and extremely high placement rates and starting salaries. MSOE graduates are well-rounded, technologically experienced and highly productive professionals and leaders.
