Disability Awareness Week is Oct. 10-14, 2011 at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). Students are planning a series of events including Wheelchair Days, a wheelchair basketball game and challenge course, lectures and an art show.
Organized by the MSOE student chapter of the Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI), Disability Awareness Week is an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges that are met and overcome every day for people with disabilities. More than 100 students are expected to participate.
Students hope the experience will stimulate future architectural engineers, construction managers and nurses to imagine greater and more efficient systems, protocols and opportunities for access and comfort (beyond the basic statutory demands of the A.D.A.) for those whose daily experience is lived two feet lower and several experiential miles less easily than everyone else.
Monday, Oct. 10 – 11:30 a.m.
Four Milwaukee County Transit System buses will take MSOE students (who will be using wheelchairs) from the Student Life and Campus Center to the East Pointe Marketplace so they can shop for groceries at Pick ‘n Save and Chipotle.
Tuesday, Oct. 11 - 6 p.m.
Students will participate in a wheelchair basketball game at 6 p.m. in the Kern Center.
Tuesday-Thursday, Oct. 11-13
Students will check wheelchairs in/out at the Student Life and Campus Center from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on all three days. From there, many will head to the Science Building or the Engineering Center for classes.
Throughout the day, students will be traveling between buildings during class changes each hour. Students are asked to go through their normal daily routine including going to class, working, going through the college food lines and negotiating their dormitory rooms. They are encouraged to go outside and experience curb cuts, sidewalk slopes and public access into various buildings.
Wednesday, Oct. 12 – 5 p.m.
Local artists will display pieces of their work at the Grohmann Museum.
Wheelchair Days are sponsored by AEI, the MSOE Office of Servant-Leadership, TRiO, Architectural Engineering and Construction Management Department, School of Nursing, Health Services, Grohmann Museum, Milwaukee County Transit System’s New Freedom Grant, the Milwaukee County Office for Persons with Disabilities and Milwaukee Public Theatre. It is part of Tap the Potential, Disability Awareness Month.
