Celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens (1812-1870) at the Grohmann Museum on Saturday, March 17 at 1:30 p.m. The Friends of the Milwaukee Public Library are hosting a free event: The Great Expectations of a Blacksmith's Apprentice. Enjoy a lecture and gallery tour focusing on Dickens and his acclaimed novel, Great Expectations.
James Kieselburg, director of the Grohmann Museum, will talk about the museum's unique collection of paintings and sculptures of blacksmiths and their apprentices, bringing to life the story of Pip, Dicken's young hero in the novel. Professor Thomas Jeffers, a Dickens scholar at Marquette University, will lecture on the novel and its author. Weather permitting, guests may also visit the museum's beautiful rooftop sculpture garden.
The program is free and open to the public, but registration is required and space is limited. Call (414) 286-8720 or email friends@mpl.org to register by March 14.
