Each academic quarter, graduating students at MSOE are invited to nominate an individual from their own secondary school experience or their working experience for the VIP/Excellence in Teaching Award. They nominate someone who not only “knew her/his stuff,” but could communicate it, and whose commitment to others included encouragement of further educational and career goals. MSOE is proud to recognize those who have had a significant influence on students’ futures and also thank those, who in some important way, motivated them, inspired them and helped make it happen for them.
Congratulations to the following:
Keith D. Lauber, Winnebago Lutheran Academy (Fond du Lac, Wis.)
Nominated by Jacob Bolda, Ryan Markgraf and Joshua Wilsmann, all of whom received bachelor’s degrees in architectural engineering and master’s degrees in structural engineering. They said, "Mr. Lauber’s approach to teaching math gave us the needed foundation in math to succeed in engineering courses. More important than this, Mr. Lauber’s teaching and encouragement played an instrumental role in our committing to and succeeding at MSOE and helped prepare us for our engineering careers."
Skip Clark, West Bend (Wis.) East High School
Clark was nominated by Sara Casper, who received a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering. She said, "Mr. Clark came to class every day with enthusiasm and a real love for teaching. He helped me realize how interesting and enjoyable the field of medicine could be, and help me to realize that I needed to do something involving science and the human body if I could. This is what helped me to decide that I wanted to do biomedical engineering."
Dmitri Cooper, Alan B. Shepard High School (Palos Heights, Ill.)
Joseph Bosas Jr., who received high honors and a bachelor’s degree in software engineering, nominated Cooper. He said "Mr. Cooper challenges his students to take the initiative to read and study prior to class so that particular mathematics topics can be intelligently discussed. As a result of his teaching efforts then, my time at MSOE has been met with success in my ability to stay ahead of coursework through the initiative and personal investment that was conditioned within his classroom and as a result has truly enabled me to succeed as a student and is what will enable me to succeed as a young engineer at Rockwell Collins."
Steve Urban, Arrowhead (Wis.) Union High School
Urban was nominated by Stephen Panaro, who received a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering. He said, "I owe a lot of my hard work ethic and drive to the study skills that Mr. Urban instilled in me. I know that without taking AP Calculus with him and the dedication that he provided to helping students succeed, I would not be where I am today."
Ryan Wiechmann, Northland Lutheran High School (Kronenwetter, Wis.)
Talea Lund, who received a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, nominated Wiechmann. She said, "Mr. Wiechmann was an excellent role model and a great person to talk to no matter what the issue. Because of his attitude, I strive to be a more positive, optimistic person every single day. He is one of the main reasons that I decided to become an engineer because of the approach to problem solving that he showed me."
Dr. Jorge Estevez, formerly at University of Wisconsin-Washington County
Megan Emmer, who graduated with honors and received a bachelor’s degree in software engineering, nominated Estevez for the award and said, “Dr. Estevez is one of the best and most involved teachers I have ever had. It was after taking his physic courses that I decided to enroll in the software engineering program at MSOE.”
