Wisconsin Regional Science Bowl winners announced

Marshfield (Wis.) High School won the Wisconsin regional championship in the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Science Bowl® for high school students held Jan. 29 at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). Alma Farooque, Jack Gellerman, Michael Josephson, Rahul Pathak, Christine Tyler and Coach Paul Herder were on the winning team. Second place went to Seth Berger, Ade Dillon, Nishant Sharma, Tapan Sharma, Michael Yohn and Coach Jon Bauer from Marshfield (Wis.) High School.
The second place team is advancing to Washington, D.C., to compete against 68 other regional winners at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Science Bowl® from April 28 to May 3. This is the second year in a row that a team from Marshfield High School is travelling to Washington. Normally, the first place team would go to Washington, but this year, Coach Herder's team also won the National Ocean Science Bowl competition. They will travel to the national competition for this event instead of the DOE Science Bowl.
Appleton (Wis.) High School finished in third place. Bonnie Anderson, Haley Feiler, Quinn McKinnon, Andrew Sung, Tyler Triezenberg and Coach Steve Franklin were on the team.
Fifteen teams of high school science and math students from Wisconsin competed. Many of these teams spent months preparing for the National Science Bowl's regional competition, which features head-to-head competition in a fast-paced question and answer format similar to the popular television game show, "Jeopardy." The students were quizzed on all science disciplines including biology, chemistry, earth science, physics and astronomy, as well as math. Most questions are so challenging many scientists would have trouble finding an answer.
In 2011, 15,000 high school sophomores, juniors and seniors across the United States will compete.
MSOE is an independent university with 2,600 students. MSOE offers 18 bachelor's degrees and 10 master's degrees in the engineering, engineering technology, building and infrastructure engineering, computer, business, nursing and health-related fields.
