Field Day fun at the Kern Center

Our Next Generation Field DayIt was a day filled with smiles, laughter, fun and exercise! On Dec. 8, 25 children from the “Our Next Generation” community organization visited the Kern Center for a Field Day with MSOE students. The children, ranging in age from 7-14, enjoyed spending time with members of MSOE’s men’s soccer and baseball teams, men’s and women’s volleyball teams, the dance team, and other student volunteers.

The goal of Field Day was to promote healthy living. The children learned some dance routines, played basketball, volleyball, baseball and soccer, and participated in relay races and an exercise station.

The fun didn’t stop there. Everyone enjoyed a healthy snack after burning all that energy and headed to the Kern Center arena to watch the men’s basketball team play a winning game against Edgewood College. During halftime the children went out on the court for some relay races and a free throw contest.

MSOE’s Student Athletics Advisory Committee (SAAC) developed the idea for Field Day and soccer player Patrick Gathof volunteered to run the event with his teammates. As plans for the event progressed, the organizers turned to a team of industrial engineering students in Dr. David Dreifus’ IE 340 – Project Management class for help. Gathof was part of that class, and he, along with Noah Corbeil-Wild, Dana Eriksen and Kira Hansen, served as the project team and made sure the event ran smoothly. The event was also supported by MSOE’s Office of Servant-Leadership.
