Banks Named NAC Coach of the Year

The 2009 men’s soccer season has been a banner year for the Raiders and Head Coach Jimmy Banks. In the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) preseason poll, the conference coaches predicted MSOE to finish fifth, but Banks and the Raiders exceeded everyone’s expectations, completing the regular season with a 9-1-1 NAC.

MSOE competes at the Midwest Regionals

The MSOE Raiders men’s and women’s cross country teams completed their season by competing at the Midwest Regionals, held November 14, 2009 at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wisconsin. The men’s team placed 26th , while the women placed 37th overall.

The MSOE Raiders defeated the North Park Vikings 79-67 in their home season opener Sunday afternoon.

Men's Soccer readies for conference run

With one conference game remaining, the MSOE men’s soccer team currently holds an 8-1-1 Northern Athletics Conference record, putting them in second place behind national power Dominican University. The Raiders have a 11-5-2 overall record, their best record since 1999 when the Raiders went 12-6-1 in Jimmy Bank’s first season as head coach.

Men's Soccer Surprise Spartans 1-0

Milwaukee, Wis. –Andrew Walhausser sent a header into the goal, off a corner kick from Brandon Crozier with 15 minutes remaining in the game, lifting the MSOE Raiders over the Aurora Spartans in an important conference game. This is MSOE’s first victory over Aurora University in the team’s history.

Milwaukee-- The MSOE Raiders defeated the Rockford Regents 18-0, breaking a school record for most goals scored in a game. Jessic Axt led all Raiders with four goals, while Jamie Janczak, Melanie Monreal and Heidi Brehmer each scored two goals apiece.

Women's Volleyball Sweeps Buena Vista

Bloomington Illinois—At the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational, MSOE was able to pick up their first win of the season, a 3-0 sweep of Buena Vista University. The Raiders won three tihtly contested sets by the scores of 29-27, 25-21, and 30-28.

Men's Soccer Alumni wins Fourth Annual Doring Cup

The MSOE Raider’s men’s soccer team had a 2-0 advantage into the second half before the MSOE Alumni scored four unanswered goals to win the fourth annual Doring Cup by the score of 4-to-2. The Alumni were led by Chris Boardman, scoring two goals, while Spencer Cook and Nick Hamill had one goal apiece.

In the MSOE women’s soccer Alumni exhibition game, the 2009 varsity team defeated the Alumni by the score of 4-to-0. Junior Heidi Brehmer scored a pair of goals, while sophomore Jessica Axt also scored two goals in the preseason victory.

MSOE joins eight in forming first midwestern lacrosse conference

Milwaukee, Wis. -- MSOE and eight other NCAA Division III schools have agreed to form the Midwest Lacrosse Conference, which will be the first NCAA men’s lacrosse conference in the Midwest. The NCAA recognition goes into effect September 1, 2009 as the conference readies for their inaugural season to begin in the spring of 2010.

AVCA selects Gibboney as Grant Burger Media Award honoree

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced that MSOE’s Brian Gibboney was selected as the NCAA Division III Sports Information Director Midwest Region Honoree for the Grant Burger Media Award. Gibboney, the MSOE Sports Information Director (SID) and head men’s volleyball coach, was considered as a finalist for the award. Gibboney was one of three Division III SID’s selected in the men’s volleyball category. This is his fourth consecutive year to receive this honor.

Women's Basketball Named Most Improved Team

The NCAA recently announced a list of most improved women’s basketball teams in Division III and the MSOE Raiders topped that list. During the 20007-08 campaign, the Raiders collected a 1-24 overall record. In 2008-2009 they had an 11.5 game turnaround, finishing the season with a 13-13 record and the first .500 record in the history of the women’s basketball program.

Men's Golf 24th at NCAA Championships

After two rounds at beautiful PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Florida the MSOE men’s golf team finished one stroke shy of making the 23-team final of the NCAA Division III men’s golf championships. The Raiders were the first Northern Athletcs Conference team to qualify for the event and the first MSOE men’s golf team to participate at the championship.

Maio Qualifies for NCAA Track and Field Championships

While running at the Gregory Invitational on May 15th, MSOE senior Dominic Maio qualified for the NCAA Track and Field Championships with a time of 3:52.08 in the 1500 meter run. This will be the second trip to an NCAA championship for Maio as he also ran at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall of 2008.

Rowing wins Lynch Cup at Dad Vail Regatta

Philadelphia--The MSOE rowing team won the BRENDAN LYNCH CUP at the showcase college rowing event in the nation: the Dad Vail Regatta, held Saturday, May 9, on Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River. The MSOE Raiders’ Frosh/Novice Lightweight eight crew upset local favorite Delaware and top programs from Georgia Tech and Penn State on their way to an “Open Water” victory. This was the first national victory for MSOE’s second year program.

Men's Golf is NCAA Bound!

Using a golf analogy, winning the fall regular season conference championship was only the approach for the Raiders as they still had to sink the putt to get to the NCAA championship tournament. In this case, the putt was a two-day spring automatic qualifier in brutal playing conditions.

Crew victory stuns Grand Valley State

Allendale, Mich. --With a revamped lineup this weekend that included several freshmen with no previous experience, the Raider’s junior varsity eight-man boat (JV8) defeated a veteran Grand Valley State Laker squad and won the Frank Yates Cup.

Woll signs professional hockey contract

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The 2008 Kelly Cup champion Cincinnati Cyclones announced on Thursday, March 5 that they have signed defenseman Jason Woll to a contract. The Cyclones are the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators. Woll, 24, is launching his professional career after finishing up his collegiate career at Milwaukee School of Engineering.

Brandt receives AVCA weekly honor

Chris Brandt, a 6-0 junior setter for the Milwaukee School of Engineering, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Men’s National Player of the Week. Brandt’s 12.15 assists per game last week helped MSOE to five wins in six tries on an East Coast road trip, including the first victory over a top-ten ranked opponent in school history.

A come from behind 3-2 overtime victory Saturday night pushed the Raiders into hosting an MCHA first round playoff home game. MSOE (13-10-2, 12-7-1 MCHA) enters the MCHA eight playoff as the third seed and will face Minnesota-Crookston (5-20-0, 5-15-0 MCHA) the sixth seed in a Friday-Saturday two game playoff at the Kern Center. Game one is Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:05p.m. Game two is slated for a Saturday, Feb. 21 4:00p.m. start.

Men's Basketball Breaks School Record; Prepares for Challenge Game

With the 67-66 defeat of the Dominican University Stars Tuesday night, Coach Brian Miller and the Raiders broke the school record for most wins in a season at 18 wins. The record was set during the 2005-06 campaign with a 17-9 mark. Last year, MSOE had a 17-10 record before bowing out in the semifinals of the NAC Tournament.

The Raiders were led by senior guard Andy Voigt, scoring 22 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field and 3-of-5 from three point range. Voigt was a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul line and had eight assists in the game.

Sabree named to D3 Hoops Team of the Week

MSOE men’s basketball player Jamel Sabree (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran) was selected to the D3 Hoops team of the week, for the week ending Sunday, November 23. Sabree, a 6-4 senior forward, was named Most Valuable Player of the Engineers Classic hosted by MSOE. He scored 29 points, 20 in the first half, in a 69-64 victory over MIT in the championship game.

Milwaukee, Wis. --In the consolation game of the third Engineers Classic, the Rose Hulman battled to a 67-63 win over Rochester Polytechnic Institute at the MSOE Kern Center Arena. Blake Knotts led all scorers shooting 7-for-14 from the field, 7-for-11 from beyond the three-point line scoring 24 points and receiving all-tournament honors.

Despite a third period assault by the Lake Forest Foresters, the MSOE Raiders held on to a 2-1 victory in their season home opener in front of a crowd of 651. Mark Ostapina, in his eighth year as MSOE's head coach, reached a milestone on the night, as he won his 100th game as a Raider. MSOE outshot Lake Forest 41-16 on the night. The Raider's scored one goal in both the first and second period, only to have Lake Forest tack one on in the third period. MSOE held on to pace their way to their first victory of the season.

Mequon, Wis.-- The MSOE Raiders women’s cross country team placed ninth at the Wisconsin Private School Invitational held in Mequon, Wisconsin. With a score of 67 points, Beloit edged out Ripon by one point to win the event. Wisconsin Lutheran (95), Viterbo (134) and St.Norbert (138) rounded out the top five teams.

The Raiders score of 77 points placed them 18 points behind winner Ripon College (59) and 13 points behind Beloit (64) who placed second in the event. Concordia University-Wisconsin (91), ST. Norbert (122) and Wisconsin Lutheran (152) followed MSOE in the standings. Individually for the Raiders, Tim Carlson led the team with a time of 27:26, placing ninth among the field of 98 runners. Carlson was followed by teammates Zak Lutz (27:36, 11th), Jay Stasiak (27:45,13th) Ben Bichler (28:07,18th) and Robert Kester (28:36, 28). Zach Sheils of Wisconsin Lutheran won the 8-kilometer event with a time of 26:01, followed closely by Jason Smith of Ripon (26:12) and Andy Ashenden (26:28) of Concordia-Wisconsin.

Men's Golf wins second straight championship

Kohler, Wis.—Up by seven strokes going into today’s final round, the MSOE Raiders held on to their lead and was crowned the Northern Athletics Conference champions for the second straight year. MSOE won the event with a two-day score of 617, five strokes ahead of second place Benedictine (622), followed by Aurora (642), Wisconsin Lutheran (655) and fifth place Edgewood (664).

Men's Golf leads NAC Championships on first day

Consistency was the key for the MSOE men’s golf team on the first day of competition of the Northern Athletics Conference Men’s Golf Championships, held at Whistling Straits Golf Course, in Kohler Wisconsin. Madison, Wis.--In Jimmy Banks nine years as head coach of the MSOE men’s soccer program, Edgewood has always given him problems and finally, he crossed that hurdle. On Tuesday, September 30, the Raiders defeated the Edgewood Eagles 2-1 on the road in Madison, Wis. In the 78th minute of play, John Varebrook scored the second and game winning goal as the Raiders defeated the Eagles for the first time in Bank’s career and only the second time in MSOE’s 14 prior meetings with Edgewood.

Softball snaps 57- game losing streak

Milwaukee, Wis.-- MSOE softball put an end to a 57-game streak of futility and began one of success as they toppled Mt. Mary in a non-conference doubleheader, Tuesday in Milwaukee. The Raiders swept the doubleheader by the scores of 13-5 and 8-5. The 57 game losing streak started on May 5, 2006 with a 7-0 loss to Concordia-Wisconsin in the second round of the Lake Michigan Conference softball tournament.

Men's tennis finishes second at NAC Championship

Jackson, Wis.-Winning four of seven possible individual conference titles was not enough to move regular season third place finisher MSOE Raiders into first place at the Northern Athletic Conference men's tennis championships today, held at Pleasant Valley Tennis Club in Jackson, Wisconsin. MSOE placed second at the championship, behind conference champion Concordia-Wisconsin, who won their second consecutive NAC title.

Chappell receives Indoor Track All-American honor

Catherine Chappell earned her third All-American honor by placing fifth place in the long jump at the NCAA III Indoor Track & Field Championships at the ONU Sports Center on Friday. The Raiders scored 163.5 points which was 43 better than second place Aurora University. The Raiders women's track and field team finished in third place at the meet with 98 points.

Milwaukee, Wis. - Senior Lee Swallow (Stanwood, MI/Northville) and junior Jason Woll (Portland, OR/Edmonds Woodway) were named to the MCHA All-Conference team Friday. Freshman Michael Soik (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) was named to the All-Freshman team. Soik was also named to the All-Tournament team for the MCHA Championship. MSOE Hockey to Host Opening Round of MCHA Playoffs

The MSOE Raiders men's hockey team will host the Lawrence University Vikings this weekend at the Kern Center in the opening round of the MCHA playoffs. MSOE campus center to go green this summer

This summer, a 29-kilowatt solar photovoltaic (PV) array will be installed on the roof of the Student Life and Campus Center building to generate electric power from incident solar radiation. Team wins award for device that uses little power to clean indoor air

A team of MSOE undergraduates has designed a device that uses ultra-violet light emitting diodes (LEDs) to sterilize air as it flows through the filters of a building’s HVAC system.
