TODAY'S HIGHLIGHTED SONG COMES FROM GENE COTTON

"LIKE A SUNDAY IN SALEM" (The Amos & Andy Song)

Gene Cotton - Like a Sunday In Salem Lyrics - YouTube

General Song Meaning:

"Cold war, nuclear holocaust. "Better dead than red." The man on the hill could be Senator Joseph McCarthy (Wisconsin), the tombstones could be those in Arlington Cemetery, the hill is Washington, DC. However, the "man on the hill" could either be the President or Senator McCarthy, or Washington politicians in general.

In the song, the anti-Communist hysteria of the "red scare" leads to a nuclear holocaust, with all the common, church-going folks standing around "like a Sunday in Salem" to cheer on the executions, not realizing the bells are tolling for them (and everyone)."

The song is performed by Gene Cotton (born June 30, 1944 in Columbus, Ohio) is a pop and folk singer-songwriter. He is best known for his four Billboard Top 40 entries during the years 1976–1978.
