“I love my job. I love my company. The experiences I have had are because of my great education at MSOE.”

Chris LaPlaca can tell you the exact moment he knew what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. “I distinctly remember sitting in class at MSOE and a guest speaker came in. He spoke about how he got to travel and interact with amazing people. And then I realized, ‘I want to be a sales engineer!’” From that point, Chris’ goal was to be a sales engineer and he has more than achieved it.

Currently working for Moxa, Chris’ job is designing industrial networks. His experience covers the gamete from nuclear and solar power plants to security systems. He is currently working on a multi-million dollar project for a prison system. “I love my job. I love my company. The experiences I have had are because of my great education at MSOE.”

Chris first learned about MSOE through the Focus on the Possibilities program. “The moment I knew I wanted to go to MSOE was during the summer camp program I attended. There was a class that we went to where every student got to participate in putting together a radio from scratch! It was right up my alley. Seeing the finished product by taking all of these pieces, soldering them on a board and then having actual radio sounds come from the board blew my mind. That is when I knew I wanted to go to MSOE. It was a great class. I still think about it to this day. I know exactly where I was sitting. I can still visualize the board in my head! It definitely had a lasting impression on me!”

During his time at MSOE, Chris worked in the admission office. He loved interacting with prospective students during events and was lucky enough to talk to them on the phone and tell students directly why MSOE was such a great place. His favorite memory is his study abroad experience at the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences in Lübeck, Germany. “Being able to live in Europe and experience the culture was life changing. It was hands down the best thing I could have done! First off, learning about a completely different culture and being completely immersed in it is a significantly better way of learning than just hearing about it in the movies or reading about it. I enjoyed meeting the people, eating the food, learning the customs, and just seeing the world! I was fortunate to travel all around Europe as well. Which, I’m sure you can imagine, was pretty amazing.”

Chris also held an internship at the Milwaukee Veteran’s Administration Hospital. “My internship was focused on robotics. I helped to create a feedback grip for stroke patients. This grip helped to gauge their recovery progress.” This experience had a great impact on Chris. One of his passions is being involved with charitable organizations that focus on chronically ill children and those suffering from leukemia and lymphoma. He also sets aside time to volunteer at homeless shelters.

When talking to him, you can hear the excitement in his voice. You can tell he loves his career and he wouldn’t have it any other way. “I get to travel all over the world. I can work from home and still meet interesting people every day. My MSOE education and experience made this wonderful life possible.”
