ESL Program Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the program?
In the fall, winter, and spring, each quarter 10 weeks long plus one week for final exams. Once you arrive you will take a placement test that will determine what level you will start in which will determine the length of the program. In the summer, we have 2, 5-week sessions.

When can I start classes?
You can start classes on any of our 5 start dates throughout the year. View the ESL Program Dates.
What is a daily class schedule like?
Classes are from 9:00am-3:50pm Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, classes are from 9:00am to 11:50am. See for more information about the schedule of classes. See ESL On-Campus Courses to see a sample schedule.
Can I live on campus?
Are there homestay options?
MSOE does not provide homestay options for students. Students are welcome to arrange their own homestays, which are available in the Milwaukee area.
What activities are offered outside of school?
Milwaukee is a vibrant city that offers many opportunities to practice your English! Each session, students are provided with an activities calendar that lists various events in the city. MSOE also has many student run organizations that put on events ESL students can participate in. The ESL program hosts events for students each session as well.
Can I skip a level?
It is possible to skip a level if you receive a 95% or higher in all of your classes during a session and score higher than an 85% on the exam for the next level.
Can I test out of the program with an IELTS or TOEFL score?
No, students may not test out of the ESL program. Students who begin the ESL program are required to complete the program before entering MSOE.
What kinds of students are in the program?
Students come from all over the world to study at MSOE. Some countries include:

How do I apply to the program?
How much does the program cost?
The cost of the program is $4,800 per level with a $200 technology fee. This fee does not include books, housing or health insurance. The level you are placed into will determine the final cost of the program. In the summer the cost for each session is $2,400 with a $100 technology fee.
The average cost of books is $250 per level.
How do I pay for my tuition?
Payment of the $5,000 tuition for the session is expected before the first day of classes. Payment can be made in person or online.
If you are a scholarship student you need to email your Financial Guarantee Letter to firstname.lastname@example.org before the start of classes.
How do I get health insurance?

Can I take a vacation during my program?
Home Country: If necessary, you may go home for a session break. However, if you are gone for more than 1 session you must retake the placement exam when you return.
Within the United States: You must complete two sessions before you are able to take a vacation within the United States. You also must be in good academic standing and not be on probation for any reason during those two sessions. You may only be gone for one session. If you are gone for more than one session, you will be out of status.
