Ava Sipek
Ava Sipek knew she wanted to pursue an engineering degree but did not know which upon entering college at MSOE. Through the MSOE Engineering Explorers Pathway, she was able to get her feet wet in a variety of engineering disciplines to decide which path was the right fit for her.
The Engineering Explorers Pathway is a one-year program offered to first year MSOE students to support them as they still decide their engineering path. The first semester offers students a broad introduction to engineering while in their second semester they can take major-specific courses in multiple majors they are interested in. An advisor helps students create a custom four-year graduation plan and supports these students throughout their academic careers.
Sipek knew she was interested in either civil engineering, architectural engineering, or construction management. Her experience in the Explorers Pathway gave her the opportunity to find clarity and decide on majoring in civil engineering.
During her first semester, Sipek attended MSOE’s Fall Career Fair and was able to secure a winter break internship with engineering firm GSG Consultants Inc. where she helped engineers improve a street-highway intersection's electrical infrastructure.
“Being part of the Explorer Program and not having a declared major initially did not prevent me from securing meaningful, hands-on internships early in my college career,” said Sipek. “MSOE’s emphasis on career readiness, networking opportunities, and early professional development played a significant role in my success.”
As she heads into her sophomore year, she worked to find another opportunity to harness her engineering skills and will be a civil engineer and transportation intern with the City of Naperville, Illinois this summer.
“My favorite part about civil engineering is getting my boots on the ground and being engaged in the community and their infrastructures.”
Sipek is from Lockport, Illinois and is a dual-athlete, competing on MSOE’s swimming and rowing teams. When she’s not spending time in the water, she also enjoys hiking and other outdoor activities.
