The next time you’re at a Milwaukee Bucks game and holding your breath as the seconds of the game clock tick down, you can thank Fabian Hurndon, software engineering student and the IT–live events network engineer for the Milwaukee Bucks, for ensuring the clock is working properly.

Hurndon scored an internship with the Milwaukee Bucks through the Milwaukee Bucks Fellowship program. Through the program, the Bucks partner with MSOE, Marquette University and Milwaukee Area Technical College to provide students with a unique learning experience, career guidance and getting exposure to the sports industry. This is MSOE’s first year being involved in the program.

“My role is to ensure the software to the clocks that run the game are set up correctly,” shared Hurndon. “I also help with the TV channel speeds around the arena, and I make sure the ticket scanners are working properly.”

As a Milwaukee native, this was a dream internship for Hurndon. “I wanted a job with the Bucks because I love basketball and have been playing it my whole life. I was raised in Milwaukee, so it was just a no brainer for me to want to work with them.”

Not only does Hurndon get to cheer on his favorite team while he’s at work, but he’s also gaining invaluable real-world experience. This internship empowers Hurndon to apply the software engineering skillsets he’s learning in class to a multitude of real-world scenarios. He was originally interested in majoring in software engineering after taking a coding class his junior year of high school. “I searched jobs and majors that fit coding and I landed with software engineering,” said Hurndon. “MSOE was rated very well for the major, and I heard good things about the school.”

At MSOE, Hurndon became well-equipped with problem solving skills, which come in handy at his internship. “My problem-solving skills really kick in with this job and getting stuff done fast,” said Hurndon. “Whether we get a call and one of the cashier registers is down and they need help troubleshooting, or a ticket sensor isn’t working and needs a reboot, we make sure to solve the problem quickly and correctly.”
