In Memoriam: Joe Meloy
Former (and legendary) MSOE golf coach and counselor Joe Meloy passed away Sept. 7, 2025. Meloy leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service, mentorship and community. He began his career at MSOE in 1976, where he served as the inaugural director of counseling services. Under his 42-year leadership in this role, the department grew into one of the most respected student support centers among private colleges in Wisconsin. He also lectured in MSOE’s General Studies Department (known today as the Humanities, Social Science and Communication Department) and played a key role in student retention efforts. His dedication to student wellness earned him MSOE’s Johanna Seelhorst Werwath Distinguished Staff Award in 1983 and leadership roles in national professional organizations.
Beyond counseling, and more widely known to the community, Meloy was a passionate golf coach. He founded MSOE’s men’s golf team and coached them for 46 years. In 1998, he was inducted into the MSOE Athletic Hall of Fame for his work as head coach of the men’s varsity golf team, which he led to 12 conference championships and multiple NCAA Division III appearances. He was named Coach of the Year a dozen times.
Meloy is survived by his wife, Kate; his children Patrick (Heather), Maggie (Pat), Madeline, and Danny (Dan); his grandchildren Nora, Eden, and Lucy; his brother, Michael; and nieces and nephews.
