“Team 1” from James Madison Memorial High School in Madison, Wis., won the Wisconsin regional championship in the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Science Bowl® for high school students held Jan. 23 at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). The team now advances to Washington, D.C., to compete against 69 other regional winners at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl® April 28-May 2.

Appleton (Wis.) West High School took second place and Marshfield (Wis.) took third place.

A total of 20 teams of high school science and math students from Wisconsin and Illinois competed. Many of these teams spent months preparing for the National Science Bowl’s regional competition, where they face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format, being tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy and math.
