Northwestern Mutual is partnering with Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) on Tuesday, Dec. 7 for Girls + AI, an Hour of Tech event. Nearly 50 eighth grade female students from Notre Dame Middle School will visit the We Energies STEM Center at MSOE to learn about artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

Girls + AI provides an extended opportunity for the students to interact with representatives from Northwestern Mutual and MSOE around hands-on STEM subject matter. During the event, the students will simulate a neural network, learn about the 5 Big Ideas in AI, and participate in explorative robotics activities.

Program descriptions:

Neural Networks – In this “unplugged” (no tech required) activity, students simulate a neural network by trying to generate captions for a mystery image.

Big 5 Ideas in AI – Students learn about the 5 Big Ideas in AI and apply their newfound knowledge to examine these big ideas in play by training a neural network, building a machine learning dataset, and exploring bias in AI-centered systems. The 5 Big Ideas in AI include perception, representation and reasoning, learning, human-AI interaction, and societal impact.

Sphero Robotics – Students explore ways to code a Spheros Robot using a tablet or a smart phone.   Girls + AI is one of multiple opportunities led by a collaboration between MSOE’s K-12 STEM program and Northwestern Mutual’s hi, Tech program available to students during the 2021 Greater MKE Hour of Tech.
