The B.S. in Operations and Systems Management degree at MSOE is the first program to be redesigned to be completely A2I2 certified. The MSOE Applied AI Integration (A2I2) Process weaves applied AI into every degree program. Rather than relying on a handful of generalized standalone “AI Literacy” courses for students of any major, MSOE’s approach embeds AI directly into existing discipline-specific curricula. This ensures students across all disciplines build practical, project-based experience in their field of study. They will graduate from MSOE with AI proficiency at the depth and rigor required for contemporary practice in their disciplines.
The Rader School of Business, with leadership provided by Dr. David Rollins, assistant professor, assessed every class in the operations and systems management program and added new elements to meet A2I2 certification.
“This program integrates AI and other new technologies at every stage,” explained Dr. Ruth Barratt, Rader School of Business department chair and professor. “New graduates need to know more than how to code—they need to know how they can quickly make an impact on their organizations, they need business acumen and they need to be confident in tackling real world problems. This program provides that foundation in a way that other universities are not.”
The A2I2 framework is built around four core ideas: foundational knowledge, practical application, critical evaluation and social responsibility. Together, these pillars aim to balance technical skills with social and ethical awareness. Programs and courses earn A2I2 certification by demonstrating meaningful integration of these elements through updated outcomes, coursework and projects.
Additional programs that are fully A2I2 certified include the B.S. in Biomedical Engineering (general and AI pathways) and the B.S. in User Experience. The A2I2 certification tag has been added to the program descriptions in the current MSOE Academic Catalog.
The Rader School of Business is working on implementing additional updates to courses and programs to meet A2I2 certification. Students are also encouraged to complement their major with the Foundations of Applied AI Minor, which includes an applied AI mini capstone project, to further strengthen their skillsets. In addition to the minor, there are also the Foundations of Applied AI Certificate and Applied AI for Biomedical Applications Certificate, which are open to students from all majors.
