MSOE students and staff volunteered at Wood National Cemetery to help prepare the grounds for Memorial Day. The group included veterans, ROTC students, non-military affiliated students and staff.

The group worked alongside the groundskeepers to lay down fresh mulch and carefully rake it around key areas of the cemetery. Chad Clogston, mechanical engineering student and U.S. veteran, was proud to help with this project.

“This wasn’t just for appearance—it was about preserving the dignity of the space, preventing weed growth, and ensuring that the grounds were peaceful and beautiful for those who would be visiting their loved ones over Memorial Day,” said Clogston.

Wood National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery in Milwaukee and is operated by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. It is one of two National Cemeteries in Wisconsin.

“As a U.S. veteran, this holds deep meaning for me. I understand firsthand the sacrifices made by those who served and the quiet honor in maintaining a place that reflects that sacrifice. Memorial Day isn’t just a date on the calendar, it’s a time to remember, to reflect and to care for the resting place of those who gave so much,” said Clogston.

Clogston and fellow MSOE students plan to continue volunteering regularly at Wood Cemetery as well as explore additional volunteer opportunities in the community. They’re also interested in partnering with students from other universities to give back to the community and make a meaningful and lasting impact together.

With Memorial Day coming up, Clogston shared what it means to him to be a veteran. “Our service doesn’t end when our uniform comes off. It continues in how we care for one another, how we remember those who came before us, and how we inspire others to lead with compassion and commitment. I’m proud to be part of a group that embodies that spirit.”
